Basically the newer cars are huge improvements in the reducing the less dangerous or severe injuries then older cars but as for surviving the e36 is still a very safe car. I've seen some e36's take violent accidents and the owners survive with only minor or at least non life threatening injuries. Shark Edit is coming.And while it is understandable that E36 interiors, being over 20 years old, will no longer be in a pristine condition, these cars had issues with their interiors even when they were new. If this is going to be a DD then the e46 is a much MUCH nicer car to spend time in. The e46 interior is a huge improvement over the e36. If you were asking about a track car I would suggest the e36 hands down. There are some really nice sport package 330i's out there for well under 10k.
