Some of your skills create Phantasms. These ghosts do an attack with tons of damage. Phantasms become Clones after their attack. Some skills also make Clones. Clones do zero damage but increase the power of Shatter. Ignore all the other shatters. For now, all you need is f1, it's raw damage. Use it when you have 3 Clones.
Plus XP gained while not working on Masteries (level 80 required) is lost from that perspective. My plan is to level to 80, get the raptor and then go back to the starter zones - "level" following the hearts and do the personal story normally but with my preferred elite spec which gives me a chance to learn it in easier spots.
A few days i was in exactly your position. I played a thief and was around level 30. i decided to buy the first 2 expansions for 30€. First of all you unlock mounts, you need a level 80 player to carry you through the mission that unlocks them, but being able to ride on a dinosaur makes exploring really easy and cool.
Make a new character, use the boost, delete the character, hence and repeat. Use it. A level 80 character using it will get all the equipment, bags, etc. Then delete the crap you don't want. However, some classes get full exotic Celestial gear, which isn't a bad alternate set to keep.
If your goal is do do open world, boss trains, Living World and personal story, then a level 80 boost can be a good thing. However, if you want to participate in end game content: raids, WvW, sPvP, Fractals, etc, I would recommend working your way through leveling by either doing map completion, or personal story activities.
Unless you want to do all the personal story instances once. Then you need 30 level 20 minimum characters, 15 level 30s, 10 level 50's, 6 level 60's and 3 level 80's (although only 2 need to do the last few steps and only 1 needs to do Victory or Death).
Then you must start the Heart of Thorns story and play the prologue and the first mission to get the basic glider, and you need a level 80 character to do that. Once unlocked, the mastery and related skins will be account-wide, so you can do that with a different character, then go back to the low level character to use it.
The class you boost WILL overwhelm you, not to mention you will be completely lost at 80, both story wise as well as content wise. The general recommendation I would give is, boost a class which: you are absolutely uninterested in leveling (or which can be a pain to level like elementalist or mesmer)
In general, exploration is the name of the game (well, actually its Guild Wars 2 but you know what I mean :P) - whatever you do, it'll likely give you experience, so just do what you enjoy. You'll get all skills and traits by level 80 anyway, so pick what sounds fun and experiment, you cant damage your character in the long run and you can
IMO it's a lot more fun to do map completion at max level with all 3 traits and all utilities unlocked. So players can boost to 80 and then start doing map completion, and get all the things mentioned above, including keys for doing map complete. The Hero points they earn will work them towards unlocking an elite spec at that point. Difficulty will increase promptly with Heart of Thorns, but Season 2 missions can be a good training to get there. Player skill is very important. In addition, get better equipment. At least exotics; to determine what gear would be best, check in with sites like: On the surface the level 80 boost may appear to be a fun way for new players to get into the game and start having fun immediately and it is for a…looks like I got all the inventory items, like bags, dye pack, harvesting tools, but that is it, but no gear or level 80 boost after finishing the introduction instance.
